May 2021- Regional Food System Partnership Meeting
Time & Location
About the Event
Our meeting this month will be a discussion about the very exciting possibilty of the development of an Individual Quick Freeze facility on the Western Slope.
Two years ago Delta and Montrose Counties conducted this Phase 1 Feasibility Study on the premise that "a regional processing facility – with the capacity to quick-freeze or dehydrate area crops – would provide an opportunity to divert [agricultural commodity] waste into value-added production and provide access to alternative sales channels, diversified product offerings, and enhanced local economic activity. A processing facility might also create the opportunity to attract additional crops from expanded local production or products imported from outside the area."
The initial study concluded "that sufficient business conditions exist to warrant a full feasibility study for developing a regional preservation facility. Those conditions include market demand, producer interest, adequate supply, and potential economic benefits."
This year a Phase 2 feasibility study is to be conducted to validate both the supply and market conclusions of the first study and to formulate a facility design, business plan, and marketing plan. At the same time, a possibility exists to stand up a small proof-of-concept facility this season to develop products for use in the feasibility study.
